Live Bliksemontladingen

Baseball-sized hail hits Texas, extreme weather threatens Tennessee River Valley today

A powerful hailstorm hit parts of Brazos Valley, Texas on March 18, 2018, leaving impressively sized hail behind. On Monday, strong tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging winds are expected across parts of the Tennessee Valley and Southeast during the late afternoon and evening.

Texas hailstorm occurred as a part of series of storms that hit the Brazos County area, bringing powerful wind gusts up to 128 km/h (80 mph) and downing trees in some areas.

The hardest hit were Caldwell and Walker counties where baseball-sized hail hit damaged homes and cars.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries from the storms.
There is an Enhanced Risk of severe weather for the Tennessee River Valley today, with the potential for strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds, NWS warns.

The Enhanced Risk continues on Tuesday, this time for northern Florida and coastal Georgia and South Carolina, where a corridor of severe winds, and perhaps a couple tornadoes, will be possible.

Severe thunderstorms expected over parts of the Tennessee Valley this afternoon and tonight:

LOCATIONS:

Northern Alabama
Far northwest Georgia
Far southern Middle Tennessee
Extreme northeast Mississippi

HAZARDS:

Several tornadoes, a few intense
Scattered large hail, some baseball size
Isolated damaging winds

SUMMARY:

Strong tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging winds are expected across parts of the Tennessee Valley and Southeast during the late afternoon and evening.

Preparedness actions:

Review your severe weather safety procedures for the possibility of dangerous weather today. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, weather.gov, or other media for watches and warnings. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form during the next several hours. If a tornado warning is issued for your area, move to a place of safety, ideally in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

Severe storms, isolated tornadoes to rattle Florida and coastal Southeast

Bron afbeelding: AccuWeather

Following severe storms that produced several tornadoes and tore a path of destruction through Jacksonville, Alabama, on Monday, residents from Florida to coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina should be on alert for severe weather on Tuesday.“Much like the storms on Monday, these storms will be capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and even a couple of tornadoes," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio said.

The storms may threaten MLB spring training games and spring break vacation plans in Florida. Florida cities that are within Tuesday's threat zone include Jacksonville, Clearwater, Lakeland, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Tampa and Orlando. Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina are also at risk for severe weather.

Residents and visitors in these areas should be prepared for possible power outages as well as tree and property damage, and take shelter if a severe weather warning is issued or lightning is seen. The rainfall early this week will largely be beneficial as portions of the southern Atlantic Seaboard remain in abnormally dry to severe drought conditions, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. In some spots, the storms may bring too much rainfall too quickly, causing urban, poor drainage and small stream flooding.

While damaging winds and localized flooding should be the primary concerns in Florida, the entire gamut of severe weather hazards can threaten areas farther north. "The most likely area for a few tornadoes will be in eastern South Carolina, where the greatest spin in the atmosphere will be located," Rossio added. Residents in the path of a tornadic storm should take cover in an interior room or basement away from doors and windows. The storms will push off the Carolina coastline by late Tuesday evening and lose their intensity before reaching Miami and Naples.
