Het dodental na de overstromingen in de Indiase staat Kerala is opgelopen tot 164. Daarnaast zijn ook ongeveer 200.000 mensen opgenomen in opvangstkampen. Volgens regiominister Pinarayi Vijayan zijn er nog duizenden mensen door de overstromingen ingesloten.Aanhoudende moessonregens hebben in de zuidelijke staat tot ernstige overstromingen geleid. Hierbij zijn vele woningen beschadigd. Naar verwachting zal het dodenaantal nog verder oplopen.
Het leger helpt bij de reddingsacties. Hierbij worden twaalf helikopters gebruikt en honderd boten. Waarschijnlijk wordt dit aantal verder uitgebreid. "Ik heb met de minister van Defensie gesproken en gevraagd om meer helikopters", zegt Vijayan.
Sommige delen van Kerala zijn dusdanig overstroomd, dat het opzetten van luchtbruggen de enige manier is om het gebied te bereiken.
Voor het weekend zijn nog meer zware regenbuien voorspeld.
