ELIE — Their home was wrenched away from around them as they hid under a mattress in the basement, but Lynn and Les Kauppila miraculously survived.
‘‘I saw (the tornado) hit the dirt field and said, ‘No more, we’ve got to get out of here,’ ’’ Les Kauppila said Saturday less than 24 hours after a devastating tornado ripped through his town of Elie.

NEELIN — Edith Desrochers had just a few minutes notice to take shelter in her basement with her family before a tornado tore open her home, destroying the structure and virtually everything inside.
As she looked over the debris strewn across her farm property yesterday, Desrochers recounted how her daughter, Coreena Sutton, may well have saved her life and those of her husband, son, daughter-in-law and two-year-old grandson, who all managed to take shelter after a phone call from Sutton.
