Colorado Springs Hit By Flooding, Hail; Water Rescues, Sinkhole Reported

Hail piled up quickly Monday afternoon in the Colorado Springs area, while torrential downpours left some drivers needing rescue from the floodwaters.

Those water rescues were reported on Twitter by the Colorado Springs Fire Department, and police told KRDO.com thatseveral roads were closed due to the flooding in Colorado Springs.

"The heavy rain and hail were caused by slow-moving thunderstorms along the Front Range of Colorado, near the I-25 corridor," said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. "An area of low pressure aloft, located over Colorado and New Mexico, contributed to the stormy conditions."

Much of the street flooding occurred when the large accumulations of hail clogged drains, CSFD spokesperson Sunny Smaldino told the Denver Post. It was not immediately known if anyone was injured by the flooding or the hail.

“The storm has sort of stalled out over us the last hour and a half,” Smaldino said. “We’re definitely getting more [rain] than we thought.”

KKTV News reported via Twitter that a sinkhole had formed, closing the intersection of Wahsatch Avenue and Fontanero Street.

Due to the flooding, the Colorado Springs Police Department went on accident alert, asking any motorists who get in minor crashes to report them online or at a police department substation, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.
