Zware aardbeving in China 7.2
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck in Xinjiang province in north-west China. The quake occurred at 0633 local time on Friday (2233 GMT on Thursday), according to the US Geological Survey. The epicentre was about 140 miles (225km) south-east of Hotan city, near Yutian county, the US agency said. Early Chinese reports of the incident had no details of casualties or damage. Xinjiang is sparsely populated, with a mainly Muslim population. The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at a depth of 22.9km (14.2 miles) and reported two aftershocks - the first with a magnitude of 5.3 and the second of 5.5. In 2003 a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in western Xinjiang killed more than 260 people and destroyed 10,000 homes.

China is vrijdagochtend om half zeven lokale tijd getroffen door een aardbeving van 7,3 op de schaal van Richter, aldus de Chinese autoriteiten. Het Amerikaanse instituut US Geological Survey mat een kracht van 7,2.
De beving vond plaats op 235 kilometer ten zuiden van Hotan in de Noord-Chinese provincie Xinjiang. Het epicentrum lag op ongeveer 37 kilometer diepte. De beving werd volgens China gevolg door twee naschokken van 5,1 en 5,2 op de schaal van Richter. Het Amerikaanse instituut meldde naschokken van 5,3 en 5,5.
Schade
Enkele dorpjes hebben wat schade doorgegeven, maar lokale overheidsfunctionarissen kammen de regio uit om de precieze schade en eventuele slachtoffers op te nemen. Dat kan echter nog enige tijd duren aangezien de functionarissen te paard het onherbergzame gebied doorkruisen. De provincie Xinjiang is een dunbevolkte regio waar met name moslims wonen

At least a dozen earthquakes have hit China's remote north-western region of Xinjiang flattening or damaging more than 2,000 houses, but no casualties had been reported so far, Xinhua news agency has said. It said about 44,000 people had been affected by the earthquakes, but gave no details.
About 2,200 houses were damaged or flattened ... during the quakes, which also toppled hundreds of livestock sheds and vegetable greenhouses, a spokesman with the regional Department of Civil Affairs was quoted as saying. China is hit by several earthquakes a year, most hitting sparsely populated rural areas and causing no casualties.
