Calif. Fire Threatens Homes Near Yosemite Valley
Wildfire threatens hundreds of homes west of California's Yosemite Valley

A growing wildfire has forced the evacuations of 170 homes near the main entrance road to Yosemite National Park and is threatening more, fire officials said Saturday. The blaze grew from about 1,000 acres to around 10,000 acres between Saturday morning and early evening, said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It is burning on both sides of a steep, rugged canyon along the Merced River. "The erratic behavior is because there is so much fuel out there to burn," Berlant said. In Northern California, authorities said a firefighter died after being struck by a tree. Andrew Jackson Palmer was struck Friday while working on the Eagle Fire near Junction City, about 50 miles west of Redding. Palmer died while en route to a hospital, said Steve Ritchie, a spokesman for the Redding-area fire command center. He had been based in Port Angeles, Wash. Near Yosemite Valley, most of the evacuated homes are in the town of Midpines, but more homes in other small towns are being asked to prepare to leave the area, state fire spokeswoman Karen Guillemin said. Midpines is on Highway 140, the thoroughfare that leads to the west entrance of Yosemite National Park. Campers on nearby Bureau of Land Management land were evacuated as a precaution. Guillemin said the cause of the fire, first reported Friday, was target shooting, but would not elaborate.

This image provided by NASA taken Tuesday July 22, 2008 shows smoke engulfing the northern Sacramento Valley in California.

Fire crews on Saturday were being flown into the hard-to-reach area. Guillemin said the weather was not helpful, with temperatures over 100 degrees and low humidity. The weather, coupled with a wilderness area filled with tinder dry fuel, has made for an extremely dangerous fire. "Dozers are trying to push dirt as fast as they can to get safety zones for our firefighters that are out there," she said. "Crews are cutting brush as fast as they can but it's an extremely dangerous situation at this point." The California National Guard planned to send two Blackhawk helicopters equipped with 660-gallon water buckets on Sunday, guard Capt. Al Bosco said.

Fire near Yosemite park threatens 2,000 homes

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - About 2,000 homes were at risk from an erratic and fast-moving wildfire near Yosemite National Park that was raging across 16,000 acres, a fire official said on Sunday.

The fire's going in all directions," said Daniel Berlant, information officer at the California Department for Forestry and Fire Prevention. "There are reports of flame lengths over 100 feet. Between 170 and 200 homes in Midpines, a town neighboring the 1,200-square-mile park in central California, were under mandatory evacuation orders, Berlant said.

Other residents who live in the communities of Coulterville, Greeley Hill and Mariposa that are west of Yosemite in Mariposa County, have been warned they may have to leave their homes if the fire approaches, he said, which would bring the total homes at risk to around 2,000.

Berlant described these areas as rural and sparsely populated. The fire is not affecting the park itself, but power supply to Yosemite Valley, an area that includes popular sightseeing spots like El Capitan, has been cut off, said Julie Chavez, a Yosemite media relations officer.

"We're running on generators," she said, adding that all four entrances to the park and major roads remain open. But "air quality and visibility have been impeded" due to the fire, Chavez said. The fire, which began Friday afternoon, was caused by a spark from a person shooting at targets, Berlant said. Continued...

Fire Destroys 12 Homes Near Yosemite National Park
Growing wildfire outside Yosemite National Park destroys 12 homes, forces evacuations

An out-of-control wildfire burning Sunday near an entrance to Yosemite National Park has destroyed 12 homes and threatened thousands more as flames forced authorities to cut power to the park. The blaze has charred more than 26,000 acres since Friday as wooded slopes ignited amid hot, dry conditions that have plagued California for months. Besides the homes destroyed, the fire has also engulfed 27 other buildings. "There's no fire history in the past 100 hundred years. That's one of the reasons this fire's been able to burn so erratically," said Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

In Southern California, about 4,000 visitors were evacuated Sunday from the Los Angeles zoo as a fast-moving brush fire burned nearby in Griffith Park. Flames came within about 1,000 feet of a California condor enclosure in the zoo, forcing the relocation of the condors and two vultures, zoo spokesman Jason Jacobs said. The fire had burned about 25 acres and was contained in under three hours, Los Angeles fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, near Yosemite National Park, the wildfire led officials to order the evacuations of 195 homes under immediate threat. About 2,000 homes faced at least some danger from the fast-spreading flames, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews near Yosemite make progress on Telegraph blaze

The fire is 60% contained after burning for more than a week; it remains a potential threat to 2,000 residences. Firefighters tightened control today on a blaze that has scorched 53 square miles of wooded terrain west of Yosemite National Park.

Authorities expressed cautious optimism that they have seized the upper hand on the Telegraph fire, which is 60% contained after burning for more than a week and destroying 21 homes outside the towns of Midpines and Mariposa. For a time last weekend the blaze burned out of control through the backcountry outside the two towns, uprooting hundreds of residents and appearing ready to make a run at Yosemite National Park.

But the efforts of 4,500 firefighters, 65 bulldozers and an armada of more than two dozen water-dropping helicopters and air tankers have stalled the 34,000-acre conflagration a dozen miles from Yosemite's entrance on California 140.

The fire continues to burn, however, on its north and east edges near Jenkins Ridge and Soapstone Hill, posing a potential threat to 2,000 residences, with the biggest risk to rural neighborhoods outside the town of Greeley Hill along Highway 120.

Other communities considered threatened include Briceburg, Coulterville, Bear Valley and Mt. Bullion Camp. The costs of fighting the fire have reached nearly $24 million, authorities said.

Bigger, tougher fires bring Calif. to the brink

Faced with hundreds of big, hard-to-control blazes, California is struggling with what could be its most expensive firefighting season ever, burning through $285 million in the last six weeks alone and up to $13 million a day. With the worst of the fire season still ahead, lawmakers are scrambling to find a way to pay for it all and are considering slapping homeowners with a disaster surcharge that asks those in fire-prone areas to pay the most.

Orange County Firefighters Tyler Johnson, left and Mike Reinhold look at fires burning across the Briceburg mountains in Briceburg, Calif. Faced with hundreds of blazes, California is struggling with what could be its most expensive wildfire season ever.

There is no more fire season as we know it the fire season is now all year-round, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said while touring wildfires last month in Northern California. "That means that we don't have enough resources." The crisis comes as California deals with a $15.2 billion budget deficit, and Schwarzenegger cited firefighting costs as a major factor when he ordered wages deferred for state workers and laid off others recently to cut costs.

Fire budgets have been strained across the West because more fires are escaping initial attacks and raging out of control, due largely to drier conditions and thicker brush. Higher fuel and labor costs are also factors.

Living on the edge
And then there are the millions of people who have moved into fire-prone areas throughout the region over the last two decades. Their presence has forced state and federal firefighters to react aggressively to spare lives and property. A decade ago, California spent $44 million to fight fires for an entire year. The $285 million already spent this fiscal year, which began July 1, is more than a year's worth of firefighting bills in nine of the previous 10 years.

During the first days of July, at the height of the battle against thousands of lightning-sparked fires, California blazed through $13 million a day. That's more than the entire annual firefighting budgets of neighboring Arizona and Nevada. Under the surcharge proposal, homeowners who live in higher-risk areas would pay the most, which is fine with Gordon Waterbury if the money goes directly to firefighting and not administrative costs.

Waterbury, 55, lived through fires that burned this summer through miles of forest and brush east of Chico, about 90 miles north of the state capital. Virtually everyone in California is in high risk, he said recently as he fixed sandwiches for diners at Scooters Cafe in his tiny Sierra foothills town of Jarbo Gap. "It's a statewide problem. It really is."
